A Cynic's Eye
View:
When you examine what the present pro-choice leaders are
doing, (or more accurately--
what they are not doing) one could get the impression
that they have been hired by the anti-choice people to pretend that they are
pro-choice and to divert the people's attention, energy, and money to useless
actions that are aptly described as futile
gesturing.
.
Futile Gesturing:
Futile gesturing is taking an action
that, if you are honest with yourself, you know will not get you the
result you want, but taking that action anyway. It's often an excuse
for failure or a way to avoid admitting failure. It's another way of
saying, "I'll try."
.
I’ll Try:
Have you ever noticed how trying
and doing are mutually exclusive. You either try to do something or
you do it, but you can’t both try and do at the same time. Saying
“I’ll try,” is both preprogramming yourself for failure and pre-justifying
your failure.
Here's a simple way to experience
this distinction. Notice something that's near you such as a pencil.
Try to pick up the pencil. If you picked up the pencil, you didn't try;
you picked it up. Put it back down and try again. Notice that trying
does not get the pencil in your hand. Only doing gets the pencil picked
up, so as an alternative to trying, choose to either do or not do.
The next time you notice yourself
saying, "I'll try," stop and ask yourself, "How committed am I to
actually doing this?" You'll probably notice a rather
lackluster commitment or no commitment at all. You may also notice
that saying "I'll try." was just a weak-willed way of saying,
"No."
.
When
"I'll Try" and "Futile Gesturing" Get Married:
A cynic could easily label the following actions as futile
gesturing designed to try to save abortion rights:
1) How many of
you think that holding picket signs
on street corners and shouting at
passing cars is going to save
abortion rights?
2) How many of
you think that Marching
on the streets in Washington, D.C.
is going to save
abortion rights?
3) How many of
you think that sending letters to politicians who
already know our pro-choice
position is going to save
abortion rights?
4) How many of you think that
saying nothing, doing nothing, and not participating in the 2004 election is going to save
abortion rights?
.
The April 2004 March
on Washington:
When you look beneath the surface, the April
2004, pro-choice march on Washington appears to have been a joke set upon
the pro-choice people by the anti-choice leaders. Here's what it
accomplished:
It got the pro-choice people to expend a vast
amount of their time, energy, and effort on a project which, in the long run,
will
accomplish next to nothing.
It got the pro-choice people to physically exhaust themselves in
an act of futile gesturing.
It got most of the pro-choice people to think that they have
actually accomplished something so they can go home and be quiet while the
pro-lifers pound the media with their message.
Technically, this is called a cathartic
release. By engaging in the activity, the person
release the body's pent up energy which allows him/her to
relax and feel better. Here are two additional
examples: attending a football game and shouting for
your team and getting laid after a long dry spell.
.
It's Action Time:
Ladies, it’s time to either wake up your leaders or
replace them!
If you don’t know what to do and how to do it, simply
being willing to learn? If you don’t know what to say and how to
say it,° then study the work of somebody who does? Here's How to Keep Abortion Legal
.
.
And once again, we are back to the bottom line. You
have two choices,
1
Teach your daughters and grand daughters
how to perform coat-hanger abortions.
or
2
See to it that the programs described
on the web page
How to Keep Abortion Legal
get publicity and funding.
