Roe Versus Wade  ---  A Blessing or a Curse?

Quote From Justice Harry Blackmun

One of  the most quoted passage from Roe v. Wade Supreme Court Decision was written by  Justice Harry Blackmun:

"We need not resolve the difficult question of when life begins.   When those trained in the respective disciplines of medicine, philosophy, and theology are unable to arrive at any consensus, the judiciary, at this point in the development of man's knowledge, is not in a position to speculate."

Unfortunately, Justice Blackmun  started the statement with  "We need not resolve the difficult question of when life begins. . . "    That is the exact opposite of what the evidence tells us.   Because of the bitter conflict over the abortion issue, we desperately need to resolve the arguments over when life begins.

The problem is that from a medical and  scientific perspective, it is impossible to determine when life begins.   From a philosophy, and theology perspective, it's equally as impossible, but that has not stopped religious leaders from simply declaring their unprovable beliefs on this topic to be factual truths.

In essence, the Supreme court said:   We (the court) are not going to declare an arbitrary answer to a question that cannot be answered.   In this context how do we answer the question, When does life begin?   We Don't!   The best we can do is answer this question.

"At what point in the human life cycle to we declare the growing life form to be an independent human being with all the rights, responsibilities, and privileges of other living human beings?"

It's a collective social decision we are looking for.   It's a declaration.   It's not based on evidence.    It's not based on facts.   It's an arbitrary point to be placed in a never a cycle of life.   This point must be decided upon by consensus and not by the business-as-usual technique of one side forcing it's ways onto others.   Because the divisions are do deep, the only way to end the anti-abortion war is to reach a consensus on this point.

What is a Consensus

Accord, harmony, compromise, consent, unity, agreement,

Consensus, in essence means to discuss questionable issue with others directly involved in or affected by a particular behavior, or position, or belief, policy, rule, law, etc.

To make  decisions with a combination of head and heart.

To bring ration, reason, the evidence, and the needs and desires of others into a decision making process.

To get all sides of an issue openly and freely discussed, and get a sense of what is the most appropriate decision, given all the evidence, the circumstances, the needs and desires of those affected.

The pope preaches about freedom while running a authoritarian dictatorship.   He and the others leading the Roman Catholic Church have no idea what consensus means and how to use consensus to run a large organization.

Roe V Wade is forcing us to learn to rule by consensus and not by power and domination.

This point must be decided upon by consensus and not by the business-as-usual technique of one side forcing it's ways onto others.

You can justify anything

Can God Kill the Innocent?
Gregory Koukl

Why is it moral for God to kill innocent human beings when it is immoral for us?

I think my answer to the woman who called me avoids the dilemma, and I think it's a fair response, but you have to think about it for a moment because it may seem like I'm trying to slip out of the problem. My answer is simply this: How is it that God can allow the taking of life of innocent people? The answer is that God, being the Author of life, has the absolute right to take life away whenever He wants to. Simply put, He gives life, He takes it away. Life is His to do with what He wants. He can give it, as the Author, and as the Author, He can take it away again.

...there is nothing patently immoral about the Creator of life taking away life. It's immoral for us because when we take life, usually we are exercising a prerogative reserved for God alone.
