Beliefs Versus the
Evidence:
Evolution:
The
Darwin-based theory of evolution is a scientific
theory. It is not a belief. It's
simply what the evidence tells us in the most
probable theory of the origins of the
Universe. Even though the evidence supporting
scientific evolution is overwhelming, it is still
incomplete.
All
evidence is peer-reviewed and subject to intense
scrutiny. As new evidence becomes
available, the theory is expanded, clarified,
adjusted, and corrected. Pieces found to
contradict the evidence are discarded.
The theory is not static or fixed, but rather like
evolution, itself, it's also evolving.
Creationism:
Creationism is not a
theory. It's a Fact!
Sure. just like the fact that the Earth is
flat, the Pope is infallible, and the tooth
fairy lives in my attic.
Creationism
is a fundamentalist Christians belief that the
entire universe was created by an intelligent,
divine, anthropomorphic being. (A super human
being) According to Christian
beliefs, about 6000 years ago,
"God" sitting on a cloud in some distant
place called heaven created everything that now
exists in six, Monday-Tuesday kind of
days.
Creationism
is not subject to review or revision. It's not
open to question or challenge or adjustment or
revision. It is fixed, rigid and
immutable. It is not supported by
tangible evidence. All evidence to the
contrary is ignored, denied or
discounted. There are literally
thousands of research findings supporting the
Darwin-based theory of evolution, none of which
matter to the believers in Creationism.
The Earth's four billion year history is discounted
with a shrug and the words, "God created it
old."
Creationism
is based entirely upon the veracity of the Christian
Bible. It's credibility as tangible provable
fact is, like other religious beliefs, something
that has to be accepted with a leap of
faith.°
The overwhelming evidence indicates that it's,
purely and simply, a religious belief.
.
A Dual Creation
According
to the writers of the Christian Bible, Genesis
1:1 "God created the heavens and the
Earth." He created two separate
thing at the same time -- Earth and everything
else. Sounds similar to creating
apples and oranges, which seem to be similar
creations in terms of their size and
importance. Look at plants and animals, or
fire and water, or hot and cold, or up and
down. They too, are similar
creations. Even the sun and the moon,
although significantly different are still quite
similar creations.
But
think for a moment of the difference between the
Earth and everything else in the known and unknown
universe. The difference between
the Earth and what in the Christian Bible is called
"the heavens" is so astronomical as
to be all but impossible to grasp by the human
consciousness. Carl Sagan gave us a glimpse
at the enormity of "the heavens"
when he said, "There are more stars in
the known universe that all the grains of sand on
all the beaches on the entire
earth."
Is
it possible that the people who believed the Earth
was flat and that the Devil had his own world
beneath their feet could possibly have exaggerated
the importance of the Earth in relation to the rest
of creation? After all, at the
time of the writers of the bible, the entirety of
creation consisted of the flat Earth some clouds
overhead, a bunch of lights above the clouds and a
devil beneath their feet. But then, how
could anyone be so brash as to suggest that sheep
herders and fisherman in a ancient agrarian, superstitious
culture could possible have things even slightly off
the mark.
You
might be interested in seeing what else the believers is creationism
believe about God.° They have made up a long list
of the attributes of God that would fit neatly in a demonic fairytale
about satin as a god impersonator.
.
An Intelligent Creator
The
fundamentalist Christians claim that the
Darwin-based theory of evolution cannot be correct
because they are unable to find what they refer to
as an "Intelligent Creator."
To use this excuse as their one and only reason for
discounting the thousands of research studies
supporting the science of evolution is not
only absurd, it's contradicted by their own
Bible. If the Bible is fact as they
claim it is, then Ecclesiastes 11:5 must be correct which makes
their claim false. Ecclesiastes
11:5 clearly states that humans
cannot understand how "God"
functions.

.
Ecclesiastes
11:5, RSV (Revised Standard Version) Ecclesiastes
11:5, RSV
...
"As
you do not know how the spirit comes to the bones in the womb of the woman with
child, so you do not know the work of God who makes everything.”
u Clearly distinguishes between the body and
the spirit, says that humans don’t know when the spirit enters the physical
form, and, most significantly, states that humans do not know how God works. Below are four additional translations
of this same verse.
Ecclesiastes
11:5, KJV (King James Version)
As thou knowest not what [is] the way of
the spirit, [nor] how the bones [do grow] in the womb of her that is with child:
even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all.
Ecclesiastes
11:5, NAB (New American Bible)
Just as you
know not how the breath of life fashions the human frame in the mother's
womb , So
you know not the work of God which he is accomplishing in the
universe.
Ecclesiastes
11:5, NLV (New Life Version)
God's ways are
as hard to discern as the pathways of the wind,
and
as mysterious as a tiny baby
being formed in a mother's womb.
Ecclesiastes
11:5, NASB (New American Standard Bible)
Just as you do not know the path of the
wind and how bones {are formed} in the womb of the pregnant woman, so
you do not
know the activity of God who makes all things.

Just
to be sure everyone understands what the above
passage tells us:
If
the Christian Bible is correct, then the
fundamentalist Christians can't understand how God
works. If they can't understand how God
works, then they could easily miss seeing and
understanding how an intelligent creator using
evolution as his/her/its creation process could
create "the heavens and the
Earth." And if "the heavens
and the Earth" were created in some other way,
they couldn't know and understand that, either.
.
The Logic of Creationism Goes
Something Like This:
We
cannot find an intelligent creator; therefore, there
is no intelligent creator. To think that
everything that science calls evolution happened by
accident is too preposterous to believe;
therefore, Darwin and the thousands of scientific
findings supporting evolution are all
wrong.
Since
their is nothing else, and because the Christian
Bible is the literal word of God, creationism is be
true. (The concept called reincarnation is considered to be a
fairytale that is to be ignored, put down, and
dismissed.) We know the Earth is
only about six thousand years old because we counted
the number of begets in the Bible.
(Beget = to father a child)
But
don't ask us about Ecclesiastes 11:5. We don't
want to talk about that because we are busy looking
for scientific evidence that proves somewhere in the
past, there was a big flood on the
Earth. And when we find that evidence,
that flood will prove that creationism is true and
that science is wrong. With regard to
what the Christian Bible tells them on this topic, they
ignore that, too.°
A
Black or White Mentality:
The
Fundamentalists have declared themselves to be Godly and scientist to be
Godless atheists. The evidence tells us that quite the opposite
is true.
Here's a quote form Albert
Einstein:
"My
religion consists of a humble admiration of the illimitable superior spirit who
reveals himself in the slight details we are able to perceive with our frail and
feeble minds. That deeply emotional conviction of the presence of a
superior reasoning power, which is revealed in the incomprehensible universe,
forms my idea of God."
Here's another quote, this time from Nobel Prize winner
in physics and the father of quantum theory, Max Plank:
"As
a man who had devoted his whole life to the most clear headed science to the
study of matter, I can tell you a result of my research about atoms this much:
There
is no matter as such. All matter originates and exist only by virtue
of a force which brings the particles of atoms to vibration and holds this most
minute solar system of atoms together. We must assume behind this
force the existence of a conscious and intelligent mind. This mind
is the matrix of all matter."
The
quotes above are from two of the greatest scientific minds to walk the
planet. Einstein and Plank were left-brain scientists who functioned
on the level of: "Prove it or it doesn't
exist." The quotes from them debunk the fundamentalist
Christian claims that scientists are atheists. Quite to opposite is
true. God and science are completely compatible as long as you don'
try to force God into one of the many, small, limited, religious, belief
boxes.°
Using
lies of omission, our fundamentalist friends are distorting the truth
again. Neither God, or Christianity is in any way threatened by
science. What is being threatened is the veracity of the
fairytale stories they are telling about God. What is being threatened is
their church's political and social structure. And to bottom
line this, the real threat is to their positions wealth, privilege and power.
They
have been (to say this politely) distorting the truth for their own
ends. Instead of working for God, they are working first and
foremost for themselves and then if it fits their agenda, they work for what
they believe about God. See the section titled: Religion
Versus God.°
and the section titled:

Christianity Being Threatened by Abortion rights?°
.
Parallel Beliefs:
The
veracity of creationism is dependent upon a few,
additional, minor declarations also being
true. Here's a partial list:
1) Every word in the Christian Bible
must be the literal word of God.
2) The
evidence that the Bible was
edited by early church leader must be false.
3) God's
Conception-Magic Act° must
also be true and a human being
must be his physical body.°
4) The reincarnation
theory must be false.°
5) Christians must have exclusive access to
God. 6) Every other religious belief must
be just mythology. 7) There must be a
literal place called heaven. 1**
8) God must be a superhuman being sitting on a cloud in
this place called heaven. The list goes
on to the point of absolute absurdity.
And you might also be interested in the characteristics
of this so-called God.°
The
only thing they leave out of their Alice in
Wonderland fairytale is the tooth fairy and the
Easter bunny. And to top all this off,
the fairytale peddlers demand that creationism be
taught in public schools and give equal credence
with the Darwin-based science of evolution.
|
1** Unfortunately for them, our fairytale
peddling friends seem to have lost heaven. As you know,
the Earth used to be flat like a three-layered cake with heaven a place above the clouds and hell a
burning inferno beneath the ground. Heaven used to be located
above the clouds, but in recent years ( since the advent of rocket science) God
has apparently moved heaven and now none of them seem to know exactly where it
is. Perhaps if they found God's
Cosmic Trash Bin for Human Beings,
heaven might be in the
same vicinity.

.
And
here's the scary part: Millions of
people believe that creationism is a fact and the
science is wrong. We wonder how these
people manage to tie their shoes all by
themselves. And here's the scariest
scary part. Millions of these people
voted in our 2004 presidential election.
.
Reincarnation -- The completely ignored possibility.°
We
don't mean to bug these people with little things
like the overwhelming evidence, but they seem
to be completely ignoring a third alternative -- the
alternative that revolves around the concept called
reincarnation. According to this theory
of creation, humans are an integral part of
creation. Here are some of the pieces of
the reincarnation theory:
Humans
are eternal divine beings that simply inhabit
physical bodies in order to experience physical
reality on Earth.
Humans
are divine co-creators who create by thought, word
and deed.
While
in human bodies these eternal beings create their
own experiences within the context of life in a
physical body on (cosmologically speaking) an
insignificant speck on dust that we call Earth.
At
death the physical body is set aside with about the
same significance as discarding an old worn our set
of clothes.
Birth
is a co-creation of three divine beings, the entity
coming to Earth, the being already here (the woman)
building a body for the entity to enter into, and
the being (the man) who provides half of the plans
for building the body.
The
Reincarnation theory significantly clashes with
creationism. It is in complete harmony with
the Darwin-based theory of evolution. For an
in-depth view of Reincarnation, see the page
titled, Universal Spirituality.°
.
A Second Look for an Intelligent
Creator
If
we want to see an intelligent creator most of us can
simply look in the mirror. We each
create our personal experiences with our thoughts,
words and actions.° The
Bible says that "In the beginning was the word,
and the word was with God and the word was
God." The latest scientific
evidence tells us that everything is energy, that
physical matter is not physical at all. It's
only energy. Consider the
possibility that you and I are aspects of
God,°
temporarily living in physical bodies on
Earth. Consider the possibility
that consciousness is all there
is.
